One of the genres that never seem to fade away is the industrial one and there can be lots of theories but the main one will be that this genre is able to fullfill the expression of someone at its most.
For some that can be some sound outbursts, while for others it’s about exploring weird sounds and then there are those who have a message.
It’s in that last category that you have to add Militia, a band that was formed by Frank Gorrissen in 1989.
Anyone who ever has seen a live gig by them, not only comes back but it’s always quite fascinating which material they brought on stage. It can be everything, from oil drums to cylinders as long as you can beat on it.
Many people will compare them to Test Dept. and that’s not out of the blue. Not only is Militia’s music mainly based on percussions but just like them, their music has an anarchist message just like the miners from Test Dept. used to have.
These tribal-industrialists certainly do have a message in a country (that’s Belgium) that sees politics as some silly entertainment. If Frank and his mates will ever convince a rural population that elect their politicians on the base of some game shows is another thing but they have something to say.
Their latest cd comes beautifully packed with a poster that shouts “We’re no longer the obedient sheep” and it almost makes you wish it was just than some poster and that the communist images would wake up a society that is satisfied with a “live and let go”-attitude.
The cynical in me says that this cd will land on cd players from people who don’t have to be convinced but wasn’t there a saying that goes like: as long there’s life, there’s hope?
If it depends on Militia, the choice is clear which translates itself into Leninesque song titles (or perhaps better manifests) like “The undeniable power of the proletariat” or “power to the people”.
And something about the music, perhaps?
Well, as said a Militia-gig is an experience on its own that goes through the veins but on this latest offering, everything’s of course based on percussion but there are so many soundscapes included that “Power!Propaganda!Production” sounds like ear friendly indus music whatever that means!
So yes, the march goes on and so does the message. Perfect stuff!

“Archive Collection 1” compilation CD
The first chapter of Militia’s Archive Collection takes us back to their 1996-1997 recordings. The disc holds six tracks taken from the ‘War Against Society’ compilation, the ‘Pain/Familiedrama’ tracks featuring Con-Dom and Laura Maes and ends with the ‘Kingdom Of Our Lord’ mcd. All tracks were previously released by the now defunct German cult-label Praxis Dr. Bearmann. A nice appetizer for Militia’s upcoming album ‘Power, Propaganda, Production!’
An essential piece of industrial nostalgia!

“Everything Is One” CD

Militia’s eco-anarchic social views lifted to a transcendental level, pushing foreward the concirn for our environment and for all living beings. “We are all the same and all are one – the other is a reflection of yourself”
Aural Pressure review of the album:
“Looking at specific tracks, ‘They marked the path’ is a standout, being an amazing piece of understated martial percussion, rousing violin and rhetoric infused vocals, and is only stronger now that I can hear it in context of the full album. ‘The hidden connection’ is another excellent piece, where by being reliant on a central pounding percussive framework, it allows a free form and loosely played violin to inject a folkish air. Alternately ‘The new found dawn’ follows a more classic style of Militia songwriting, which would not be fully complete if it were not for the trademark disharmonic horn wails. Grandiose indeed! The title piece and final track concludes the album on a sombre note, due mostly to the removal of the overt percussive elements. Thus with the absence of such a central aspect, the moody orchestral layers remain as the backing for the soprano vocals, whilst the acerbic vocal sermon recites the album’s concept one last time.
By virtue of not to attempt to outdo the unbridled anger of “The Black Flag Hoisted”, Militia have succeeded in producing a fantastic follow up, of which my appreciation has grown with each subsequent rotation.”

“New European Order” box 3 LP’s

.

Militia present their first official album, a 3 LP set in large fold out cover, released by the German cult label Praxis Dr. Bearmann, now defunkt.  Their music is a combination of left wing political ideas and industrial rhythms. Their music is percussive, using  percussion installations, tools, conventional drums, self-made wind instruments and electronic instruments. This album was sold out rapidly and was a great success: it meant the start of their carreer as a left wing muscle workers unit with a continiously growing fan base and more innovating albums to come!

.

“Kingdom of Our Lord / Maschinenzimmer” miniCD

.

PDB overview at www.special-interests.net:
“Fuck, if I said the 3xLP was their best… well, it is only because this is SHORT. It is 20 minutes, packaged in A4 “special” sleeve with horribly pixelated images. Music is phenomenal. Just superior to about everything, but due being miniCD on oversized pixelated sleeve, it loses on 3xLP set.
Really, only reason I might rate this lower than 3xLP is length. But if we look to material itself, this is simply unbeatable. One could say that what Test Dept could have been, Militia actually IS. Compositional skills of Militia is beyond all the other percussive industrial out there. Even if you find many times that the base of track is some steady beat of bass drum, there are layers of clang of radiators, large sheets of metal, obscure tones of synths, perfect reverbs,.. It doesn’t sound as if they just grabbed “whatever available”, and bang that. Instead it sounds as they went to search what makes the desired sound, and the compose the percussion patterns for each distinctive percussion instrument. These two tracks also are superior in composition. It’s not only about one thing. But the flow of tracks from point to another is seamless, yet very clear changes. There nothing what sounds like it was sampled or uncontrolled by people at top of their skills. The massive droning choir like climax of the track with religious speech, sweeps anything what was left after near 10 minute percussive beat.
Next track is something like Test Dept at their best video soundtracks. High pitched fast junk percussion sounds almost like train going on tracks. Very clearly floor tom sound giving bounding base on track. Sometimes nearly random sounding, but perfect sounds of sheets of metal and “ping” of iron bars/pipes thrown around. No distortion really. Not beyond the analogue warmness. It’s all slightly saturated and very close to surface. It doesn’t sound distant, which is the problem of many later Militia works. Modern day digital recording probably couldn’t provide the same atmosphere. After c. 4 minutes  the divine organ drones start to fade in. It is very strangely out of timing compared to percussion. But while you’d think it could mean it ruins the track, actually it doesn’t. Perhaps even opposite. Song slowly fades out, in utmost repetition, but something that could simply go on and on for perhaps LP side worth without getting old.
I hope this, will be among first to be re-issued. I guess it is the smallest edition of Militia releases?”
